The Experienced Diver Program is your ticket to a bucketful of unforgettable memories – tales of underwater adventure that you’ll tell for decades to come.
EDP Computer trips are reserved for Advanced Divers with a minimum of 50 logged dives.
Your safety remains our number one priority at Dive Paradise, so please note the following:
Requirements:
- Documented minimum of 50 logged dives
- Advanced Certification is mandatory. EDP divers must be skilled in managing air consumption, depth and buoyancy. You must be capable of diving in swift currents, caverns, and other rigorous conditions.
- A computer is a must. Either bring your own (you must be proficient in its use) or rent from Dive Paradise (Divemasters can show you how to use rentals).
- Divers must be “current” to qualify for boat diving.
- If a diver’s last dive was within the last 12 months, a daytime warm-up shore dive is required with a buddy or a Personal Divemaster. No solo divers allowed for shore dives.
- If a diver’s last dive was 13 to 24 months ago, we require a Refresher course with an Instructor before any open water dive trip.
- If a diver’s last dive was more than 25 months ago, we require a Scuba Tune-up course with an Instructor before any open water dive trip.
- You must book a regular Caribbean or Express trip to occur prior your EDP trip as a ‘warm-up’ dive with our Divemasters. Demonstrated proficiency on prior dives with Dive Paradise is required.
Prone to seasickness?
Consider taking a preventative medicine before boarding the boat. If you wait until you are already sick to take the medication, it will not work.
• The two northern dive sites (Barracuda and San Juan) require special written permission (1 day prior) from the port captain.
Detailed Scuba Dive Trip Itinerary
There’s a cluster of legendary deep sites near the southern tip of the island, inside the marine park: Colombia, Maracaibo, Devil’s Throat, Cathedral and Punta Sur.
Two reefs — Barracuda and San Juan — are located off the northern end of Cozumel. They lure experienced divers outside the park.
It’s the location of these remote reefs and walls – at the southern- and northern-most ends of the island — that makes these dives challenging. These sites face the open sea. Unprotected, they take the brunt of the prevailing winds.
So expect turbulent waters. Heavy swells. Unpredictable, fast-moving currents — both at the surface and underwater.
For experienced divers, watching for sudden changes is the order of the day. Every day.
It takes The Right Stuff to pull off safe dives on these challenging reefs. This is where Dive Paradise shines. It takes a crew with exceptional local knowledge, skill and experience to negotiate the tricky winds, waves and currents.
It’s all about dropping divers in the right place at the right time, in the most demanding of conditions. Captain, Divemaster and mate must all work in synch. Everyone’s gotta mesh… with the precision of the movement in a Swiss watch.
It takes the right boat to speed divers to these distant reefs. But fast by itself isn’t good enough. It takes a special fast.
Once again, this is where we shine. Dive Paradise maintains the largest fleet of safe fast boats in Cozumel. A special generation. All solid, stable, seaworthy, wide of beam, roomy and comfortable.
Each fast boats is perfectly adapted for drift diving in the most demanding of ocean conditions. With twin-engines, marine radios, and DAN oxygen and first aid kits.
Other dive operators may sacrifice safety and comfort on the altar of speed. At Dive Paradise we never compromise. With us, speed, comfort and safety all go hand in hand. And this pays off big with the Experienced Diver Program.
Dive Paradise in Cozumel
At Dive Paradise our fleet includes a special generation of express boats: each solid, stable, wide of beam, roomy and comfortable. Each fast boats is perfectly adapted for drift diving Cozumel in small, intimate groups.
Other dive operators may sacrifice safety and comfort on the altar of speed. But at Dive Paradise we never compromise. With our impressive express boats, speed, comfort and safety all go hand in hand. Count on us for fast boats with lots of “elbow room.”
Pick-Up Information
Boats make their first pick-up at 8:30am, at the Dive Paradise location at Cozumel Hotel & Resort.
The boats head south, for pick-ups at the Dive Paradise location at Villablanca Beach, and other piers.
Important:
Please confirm pick-up time and location in advance, to avoid confusion and disappointment at the dock.
Your boat then speeds south to the walls and reefs.
After the second dive, we head home. Most EDP trips return at 12:30 pm (morning trips) or 5:00 pm (afternoon trips)
We need a minimum of four divers to offer this trip.
Small groups
Many of our fast boats accommodate ten divers. On EDP trips we provide one Divemaster for each six divers. If a group exceeds six, we split it in two and send an extra Divemaster. That way, we keep groups small underwater.
Safety is Number One
Your safety remains our number one priority at Dive Paradise. So we emphasize conservative dive profiles. We recommend a dive computer — BYO (bring your own) or rent from Dive Paradise.
How do you select dive sites?
It’s “divers’ choice” — Divemasters present options and look for a friendly consensus. When necessary, the crew may select the dive sites, in consideration of safety factors such as strong currents or weather.
Boat Notes
• We serve complimentary snacks and purified water.
• Want to cut down on plastic waste? Please bring your own refillable water bottle!

Diving from a fast boat is different than diving from a big “Caribbean” boat. How so?
Express trips cater to more experienced divers. Everything happens at a quicker rhythm, so it pays to think two or three steps ahead. A little preparation goes a long way
Express boats have sturdy portable ladders instead of dive platforms. To drop into the water, divers use a backward roll, over the side. The crew hangs the ladder on the side of the boat, and divers exit the water via the ladder. Need help with unfamiliar skills? Just ask — the Divemasters stand ready to assist!
Express boats are open. They’re not covered on the top and sides. So the wise diver prepares for exposure to nature’s elements: sun, wind, rolling seas, rain, splashes, heat, and (sometimes, even in Cozumel) cold. Express boats do not have toilets.
